How can you lower your cholesterol levels naturally?
Over 50% of the Spanish population suffers from hypercholesterolaemia, an alarming figure if you consider that high cholesterol is one of the main health issues worldwide. Adopting healthy habits through diet and exercise is the best way to control and reduce cholesterol levels and guarantee good health.
For this reason, at Probelte Pharma we have developed Keriba Duo, natural capsules for cholesterol that help to prevent the risks associated with developing cardiovascular diseases like high blood pressure. After all, do we really know what it means to have high cholesterol?
Diseases
Too much cholesterol in your arteries causes them to narrow and stiffen, making it more difficult for blood to flow properly. This is known as arteriosclerosis and becomes especially dangerous if it happens in the coronary arteries, as this increases the risk of a heart attack or chronic heart disease.
Unhealthy habits
Alcohol, smoking and eating lots of salt are some of the biggest causes of high cholesterol; drinking too much alcohol can raise cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and smoking damages blood vessels, increasing the likelihood of developing heart disease. Meanwhile, regularly eating too much salt can lead to high blood pressure.
Physical activity
Running, walking or swimming for at least 30 minutes a day and 5 times a week helps you to lose excess weight, and reduce LDL cholesterol levels. As these are aerobic exercises, they make the heart pump faster and harder so your metabolism speeds up, resulting in more calories being burned, and they also help to stimulate enzymes that promote the movement of LDL cholesterol from the artery walls to the liver, aiding its subsequent elimination.
Diet, cholesterol-lowering foods
As we explained in previous posts, there are two types of cholesterol which are known as bad cholesterol (LDL) and good cholesterol (HDL). Any efforts you make to lower your cholesterol levels should be focused on lowering the bad cholesterol (LDL), which is made up of low-density lipoproteins.
Therefore, it is recommended that your diet be low in saturated and trans fats and salt, i.e. avoid fried foods, processed foods and ready meals, sausages, full-fat dairy products, etc. The foods we recommend you add to your diet are as follows:
- Oats and barley: whose regular consumption can reduce LDL cholesterol levels in the blood by 10%.
- Vegetable oils: olive oil is very good for us. It should be consumed raw to preserve all its properties, and it is high in monounsaturated fatty acids (oleic acid), vitamin E and phytosterols.
- Nuts: they contain phytosterol, which is known to reduce levels of bad cholesterol.
- Pulses: they lower the risk of fat building up on the walls of arteries.
- Fruits and vegetables: if you consume them whole and not in juices, you will retain their fibre content, which has a cholesterol-lowering effect.
- Oily fish: higher in vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids than white fish. These types of fish are convenient to eat because many of them are canned, like sardines, mackerel, bonito or tuna.
As we said at the start of this post, at Probelte Pharma we have created Keriba Duo, a supplement in the form of natural capsules for cholesterol, with no chemicals added in the laboratory, created from natural extracts obtained from the fresh fruits of the olive (Olea europaea) and the pomegranate (Punica granatum L.). A healthy, natural food supplement that helps you to combat high cholesterol and restore normal levels in your blood.
