How can you prevent fluid retention?

Fluid retention causes an increase in body volume due to a higher-than-usual build-up of intercellular water. This can occur for a variety of reasons, such as standing in the same position for a long time, poor circulation, eating too much high-salt food, or as a result of certain diseases.

It is usually not a serious problem, but sometimes requires medication to fix it, especially when it is caused by kidney, heart or liver disease. In other, less complex cases, simple lifestyle changes may be sufficient.

Additionally, in the summer, the heat and humidity make you feel more bloated and heavier. As we have already mentioned, to prevent fluid retention there are some natural diuretic remedies and also cosmetic treatments such as lymphatic drainage.

Natural remedies to prevent fluid retention.

To prevent or reduce fluid retention naturally, it is important to:

  • Consume pomegranates or food supplements that contain them, like Keriba Duo, which helps to reduce fluid retention because it is rich in potassium and sodium. It is also very beneficial for people with high blood pressure.

Keriba Duo, a natural product obtained from the whole fresh fruits of the olive and pomegranate, helps to reduce fluid retention problems and to prevent cardiovascular diseases like hypertension and to control cholesterol levels, promoting optimal cardiovascular health.

  • Consume diuretic infusions such as horsetail, hibiscus, gotu kola, green tea, etc., all of which increase the urge to urinate and therefore help to eliminate retained fluids.

  • Drink plenty of water, preferably 2 litres a day.

  • Replace saltwith condiments like pepper, oregano or parsley.

  • Increase your intake of diuretic foods like tomatoes, cucumbers and watermelons; water-rich foods like strawberries, lettuces, cauliflowers and apples; and potassium-rich foods (avocados, spinach, yoghurt, bananas, etc.), which help to reduce the amount of salt in your body.

  • Avoid processed and high-fat foods such as sausages, smoked meats, pastries, etc.

  • Avoid a sedentary lifestyle. Physical activity improves blood circulation and prevents fluid retention.

  • Put your legs up for 5 minutes at the end of the day.
