How to spot the symptoms of respiratory allergies and how to treat them

Spring awakens something in us. And no, we’re not referring to the well-known adage, but to the effects that this time of year unfortunately has on many people; allergies and that unpleasant feeling of heaviness caused by springtime lethargy.

Therefore, in Probelte Pharma’sallergen immunotherapy blog, we are going to identify the symptoms of allergy so that you can find out if you suffer from it and identify the cause of the allergy. Last but not least, you will learn about the right treatment for the allergy and whether or not there is currently a cure for it.

Main symptoms of allergy

    • Nasal symptoms: the first thing you’ll notice is the typical sneezing, intense itching in the nose and a large amount of mucus in the form of a runny nose. These symptoms are mainly caused by pollen and are known as allergic rhinitis.
    • Pulmonary symptoms: you may have allergic reactions in the lungs, resulting in a dry cough or breathing difficulties. These symptoms are exacerbated by dander and pet hair (mainly from cats and dogs) or certain types of environmental irritants.
    • Itchy, red and dry eyes: there are some types of allergens such as dust mites and smoke that irritate the eyes, causing itching and redness, in some cases even making the eyes quite watery.
    • Hives: this is a skin reaction (mainly on the back and limbs). Some people have a strong reaction when an external substance comes into contact with their skin. There are many types of allergies that affect the skin with different types of symptoms: redness, inflammation, itching, rash, blisters, peeling, and so on. The allergens that can cause the symptoms of skin allergies include: animals, foods, medicines, insect bites, the sun, nickel etc.

Treatment for allergy

There are 2 main types of treatment for allergy that are commonly used, depending on the type of allergy the patient has:

    • Antihistamines, whose function is to block the effects of histamine, which is a substance produced by our body in response to the allergens that cause the symptoms described above. If you are prescribed them, you must take them when and how you are directed in order to notice their effect. They do not cure or target the source of the disease, but they do help you to feel better and reduce the unpleasant symptoms.
    • Immunotherapy, which changes the way your body reacts to substances that trigger allergies in you, so that they gradually stop causing these symptoms. This gradual improvement will be noticeable a few months after starting the allergy treatment. These are long-term treatments, but they do cure the allergy.
